Weicon Plastic Repair Stick is a special kind of epoxy putty made from epoxy resin with plastic fillers. When you take it out of the tube, it’s soft and pliable but once you work knead it and apply, curing begins and it will become a hard, solid mass. Like all grades in the Weicon Repair Stick range, Plastic Repair Stick is very simple to use; cut off what you want, knead and stick.

Weicon Plastic Repair Stick is light blue in colour and can be used to cover gaps up to 15mm. It has an extended pot life of 20 minutes which allows for extra time (compared to most other grades) for ensuring the putty is properly placed and shaped before curing will commence. Once curing does start, Plastic Repair Stick will be at handling strength (35% cure) after about 40 minutes and be 50% cured after 3 hours. Once fully cured it can be drilled, machined and tapped.

Plastic Repair Stick bonds very well to most types of hard plastics (such as epoxy sheets or rigid PVC) and fibre reinforced materials like fibreglass. Good adhesion is also achieved with metals, wood, stone, wood, glass and ceramics. It does not bond well to rubbers.

Applications for Plastic Repair Sticks

  • Fixing cracks, leaks and holes in plastic pipes and elbows
  • Repairing and sealing fittings and flanges
  • Repairs to water tanks
  • Sealing around windows and doors
  • Repairs to pumps and pump housings
  • Repairs to bumpers
  • General repair, patching and filling work on plastic surfaces and components.

Plastic Repair Stick Adhesion Compatibility with Various Material Types

Metal (e.g. stainless steel, brass, cast iron, aluminium) Compatible
Hard Plastics* (e.g. epoxy laminates, rigid PVC) Highly Compatible
Wood (e.g. oak, beech, spruce, balsa) Compatible
Derived Timber Products (e.g. plywood, MDF) Compatible
Fibre Reinforced Materials (e.g. GFRP, CFRP, Fibreglass) Highly Compatible
Glass, Ceramics Compatible
Stone (e.g. granite, brick, concrete, marble) Compatible
Rubber Elastomers Not Compatible

*Performance will vary depending on the exact type of plastic being bonded. Generally, low surface energy plastics will be much harder to bond to then high surface energy (such as rigid PVC).

Do I need to do anything special to the surface before applying the repair stick?

Not really. Just make sure it’s clean and free of dirt, dust or grease (especially true in food areas). If you’re sticking to really smooth surfaces and it’s possible, adhesion will be improved if you roughen the bonding area a little first. Just a bit of sandpaper will often do the job here.

Does it shrink?

Only a very tiny bit. Linear shrinkage is less than 1% during the curing process.

What do I cut bits off with?

Pretty much anything. Really, a butter knife will do the trick here. One thing worth remembering, since pot life is so quick make sure you just cut off and knead the amount you’re going to use immediately. Also, be sure to clean you’re cutting tool as quickly as possible as parts of the putty can stick and cure on it.

Are other colours available?

Not for this particular grade. That said, there are other types of Weicon Repair Sticks that may be suitable and these are different colours (e.g. Copper, Stainless Steel). Weicon Plastic Repair Stick can also be painted once it is fully cured.

Does it conduct electricity?

No. Being an epoxy resin based product, Plastic Repair Sticks are dielectric and have a dielectric strength of 3kV/mm according to ASTM D149 testing.

What if I don’t use the whole pack?

That’s fine. Just make sure you only mix the amount you need. Pot life doesn’t start until the two components are mixed which is why you need to cut off and knead just the amount you are going to use. It is suggested that any remains have their little foil cover put back over the end, be placed back in their tube, and be kept in the fridge if at all possible as this will extend the useful life of the product.
