  • Fast Curing, Steel-Filled Epoxy Putty
  • Sets Hard to Form a Tough, Strong and Permanent Repair Solution
  • NSF Approved for Use in Repairs to Drinking Water Systems and Containers

Steel Repair Stick is a hard-wearing style of epoxy putty. It is manufactured from epoxy resin with steel fillers and is soft and pliable immediately after mixing, before setting hard for long lasting, permanent repairs.

Steel Repair Sticks are used for making fast, high-strength repairs to metal parts (including aluminium, brass, cast iron, stainless steel and more) as well as many hard plastics, wood and derived timber products, glass, ceramics, stone and fibre reinforced materials like fibreglass or epoxy glass sheet. It does not bond well to rubber.

This grade of epoxy repair putty, like the rest in our Repair Stick range, is very easy to use. The tube contains both parts of this 2-part epoxy in the correct portions. That makes mixing as simple as cutting off the desired amount and kneading until it takes on a single, consistent colour.

Once it is mixed, Steel Repair Stick has a pot life of just 4 minutes. It’ll reach 35% of its final strength 10 minutes after you apply it and be around 50% cured after about an hour. Full cure will be achieved after approximately 24 hours.

The fully cured putty will be dark grey in colour and will withstand temperatures up to 150°C. Steel Repair Stick recorded a average tensile shear strength of 4.1 N/mm² when bonded to sand-blasted steel (measured after 7 days in accordance with the DIN 53283 standard).

Steel Repair Stick is ideal for filling holes, sealing and patching cracks and smoothing out gaps or uneven surfaces. Once it’s fully cured it can be sanded, tapped, threaded, drilled, machined or painted.

Steel Repair Stick is manufactured by Weicon in Germany. It is NSF approved for use in drinking water applications and both ISSA and IMPA registered as a solution for the marine and shipping industry.

Applications for Steel Repair Stick

  • Bonding of metal parts and components that do not fit together tightly (large bonding gaps up to 15mm)
  • Sealing around pipe fittings
  • Patching holes in metal, fibreglass, hard plastic, wood and other rigid materials
  • Refinishing scratched or uneven metal plates and surfaces
  • Sealing cracks and holes in tanks
  • Fixing pumps and pump housings
  • Fixing torn out or burred threads
  • Reinforcing or refixing loose or broken balcony railings or bannisters
  • Fixing holes and stopping leaks in pipes
  • Repairs in the marine sector
  • Bonding and repairs to wood and wood-based components and sheeting
  • Bonding, gap-filling and repairs to hard plastics and fibre-reinforced rigid sheets like epoxy glass laminates and fibreglass sheet
  • Covering gaps, securing and filling holes in stone, masonry, bricks and concrete
  • Securing and gap-filling around ceramic and glass sheets and parts
  • Many other areas in the engineering, automotive, DIY, hobby, food & beverage and facilities management sectors where a fast setting, hard-wearing putty is needed for maintenance and repair.

Do I need to do anything special to the surface before sticking the repair stick?

Not really. Just make sure it’s clean and free of dirt, dust or grease (especially true in food areas). If you’re sticking to really smooth surfaces and it’s possible, adhesion will be improved if you roughen the bonding area a little first. Just a bit of sandpaper will often do the job here.

How long does it take to completely cure?

Steel Repair Sticks will be fully cured in about 24 hours. We say about because this depends a lot on the conditions they’re curing in. The 24-hour estimate is based on a 20°C cure environment. Warmer temperatures will speed this up while lower temperatures will extend it. If you’re using the repair sticks for repairs in a cool room or a fridge you will need to turn the equipment off to allow for curing as temperatures below about 6°C may result in little to no cure.

We really should stress as well that these times are for full cure. At 20°C Weicon Steel Repair Sticks will achieve handling strength (20% cure) in about 10 minutes and be 50% cured (mechanical strength) after 60 minutes.

Does it shrink?

Only a very tiny bit. Linear shrinkage is less than 1% during the curing process.

What do I cut bits off with?

Pretty much anything. Really, a butter knife will do the trick here. One thing worth remembering, since pot life is so quick make sure you just cut off and knead the amount you’re going to use immediately. Also, be sure to clean you’re cutting tool as quickly as possible as parts of the putty can stick and cure on it.

Steel Repair Stick Adhesion Compatibility with Various Material Types

Metal (e.g. stainless steel, brass, cast iron, aluminium) Highly Compatible
Hard Plastics* (e.g. epoxy laminates, rigid PVC) Compatible
Wood (e.g. oak, beech, spruce, balsa) Compatible
Derived Timber Products (e.g. plywood, MDF) Compatible
Fibre Reinforced Materials (e.g. GFRP, CFRP, Fibreglass) Compatible
Glass, Ceramics Compatible
Stone (e.g. granite, brick, concrete, marble) Compatible
Rubber Elastomers Not Compatible

*Performance will vary depending on the exact type of plastic being bonded. Generally, low surface energy plastics will be much harder to bond to then high surface energy (such as rigid PVC).
