In North-Western Germany, there is a town called Wuppertal. There lives the oldest electric elevated railway with hanging cars in the world known as the Wuppertal Suspension Railway.
Unfortunately, corrosion damage to the structural steel bridge girders were identified at the central station. This article explains how these were repaired quickly and efficiently using Weicon Plastic Metal HB300 Epoxy Steel.
First, Preparation and Cleaning.
The corroded and warped steel sheets were disassembled and the corrosion on the girder was removed through sanding.
Next, the bonding surfaces were thoroughly cleaned with Weicon Cleaner S. This cleaning is always an important step before the application of any Plastic Metal.

Application of Weicon HB 300.
HB300 Plastic Metal is an epoxy resin characterised by its’ excellent wear resistance and high tensile strength.
To repair these steel components, this epoxy resin system was applied to new steel sheets generously in a V-shape.
The sheets were then mounted and secured. This process forced excess HB 300 to flow (it was done before it began to cure) and automatically fill any surrounding gaps with epoxy.

Thanks to the use of HB 300, a complete force closure is achieved. This way, moisture penetration and thus, further corrosion, is prevented. HB 300 is wear-resistant and perfect for bridging gaps.
