Our Basalt Braided Insulation Sleeving is a heavy-duty, high-temperature protective sleeve designed to insulate and protect hoses, cables, wiring, tubes and pipework operating in demanding industrial environments.

Manufactured from texturised basalt fibres in a flexible tubular braid, the sleeving features a substantial 3mm wall thickness that provides additional bulk for thermal insulation and mechanical protection.

Basalt fibre combines excellent temperature resistance with good mechanical durability and resistance to many commonly encountered industrial fluids and chemicals. This makes the sleeving particularly well suited to hydraulic systems, machinery, process equipment and other installations where hoses or cables require protection from a combination of heat, abrasion and harsh operating conditions.

Heavy-Duty 3mm Texturised Basalt Construction

Unlike lightweight filament sleeving, this product is manufactured using texturised basalt fibre with a nominal 3mm wall thickness.

Texturising gives the basalt yarn greater bulk. Comparable texturised basalt sleeving manufacturers specifically identify this additional trapped air and fullness as beneficial to insulation performance.

The resulting sleeve provides a substantial protective layer around the component while retaining the flexibility required to follow hoses, cables and pipework.

This makes it particularly useful where insulation and mechanical protection are both important, rather than simply providing a lightweight covering.

High Temperature Protection to 648°C

Basalt fibre is inherently suited to demanding high-temperature environments.

Our Basalt Braided Insulation Sleeving has a specified working temperature range of -40°C to +648°C, with the basalt material having a melting point of approximately 982°C. It also carries a VW-1 flammability rating.

This combination allows the sleeving to provide a durable thermal barrier around components positioned close to hot machinery, process equipment, engines, exhaust systems and other significant heat sources.

The 982°C figure should be regarded as the melting point of the basalt material rather than its recommended continuous operating temperature. For normal product selection, +648°C is the appropriate published maximum working temperature.

Protect Hoses, Cables & Pipework

One of the principal advantages of braided sleeving is its ability to provide thermal protection directly around the component requiring protection.

Basalt Braided Insulation Sleeving can be installed over:

  • Hydraulic hoses and lines.
  • Industrial cables and wiring.
  • Electrical cable bundles.
  • Fuel and fluid lines.
  • Pneumatic hoses.
  • Tubes and small-diameter pipework.
  • Process lines.
  • Machinery and equipment connections.

The flexible tubular construction follows the component being protected and provides insulation around its circumference without requiring a separate fabricated jacket or blanket.

Thermal Insulation & Heat Containment

Basalt sleeving can be used both to protect a component from an external heat source and to help insulate a hot hose, tube or pipe from its surroundings.

This makes it useful for applications where controlling surface temperatures or reducing heat transfer is important.

The thick texturised construction can also assist with personnel protection by providing an insulating barrier over hot lines and components in areas where workers may otherwise come into accidental contact with heated surfaces. Personnel protection is specifically identified as an application in the supplied technical data.

Actual external surface temperature will depend on the underlying component temperature, sleeve size and thickness, installation method, airflow and operating environment, so the sleeving should not be treated as guaranteeing a particular safe-touch temperature.

Abrasion & Mechanical Protection

Heat isn't the only potential source of damage to industrial hoses and cables.

Movement, vibration and repeated contact with surrounding equipment can gradually wear through exposed hoses, cables and wiring.

The 3mm thick braided basalt construction provides a durable sacrificial layer around the component, helping protect it against abrasion and general mechanical wear while simultaneously providing thermal insulation.

This combination is particularly useful around hydraulic equipment and heavy machinery where hoses may experience heat, vibration and mechanical contact during operation.

Resistance to Industrial Fluids & Chemicals

Basalt fibre also provides useful resistance in demanding industrial environments.

The supplied technical data describes the sleeve as highly resistant to most oils, hydraulic fluids, fuels, acids, alkalis and moisture.

This makes it particularly useful around hydraulic and process equipment where occasional contact with industrial fluids may be difficult to avoid.

Chemical compatibility can vary according to the particular chemical, concentration, temperature and exposure conditions, so suitability should be confirmed for critical chemical applications.

Typical Applications

Basalt Braided Insulation Sleeving is particularly suited to applications where heat, abrasion and demanding environmental conditions occur together.

Typical applications include:

  • Hydraulic hose heat protection.
  • Industrial cable and wiring protection.
  • Hose and cable protection around engines and machinery.
  • Hot pipe and tube insulation.
  • Process equipment insulation.
  • Fuel and fluid line protection.
  • Heavy equipment and mobile machinery.
  • Automotive and engine-bay thermal protection.
  • Exhaust-adjacent hose and cable protection.
  • Manufacturing and processing equipment.
  • Personnel protection around hot tubes and pipework.
  • General industrial thermal and abrasion protection.

Comparable basalt sleeving is also commonly used in automotive, marine, metallurgical, chemical and heavy-equipment applications.
